Chapter 21

Abi

“October 2204: The bunker was up and running. The command center and half of the apartments were ready. We had people inside some facilities, watching closely, studying the behavior of students to determine whether they could be trusted or not, recruiting for the cause.” (Deborah Davis’s journal)

It was already 12:30 p.m. when I left the training center with Maria. My thigh ached, but Matt said that would last a couple of weeks.

We were ravenous and went directly to the dining hall. The room bustled with activity. Davon was nowhere to be found. Maybe his meeting was taking longer than expected.

Today’s menu was mashed potatoes and steak. I followed Maria to a table, where Tammy, the teacher I’d just met, was sitting. Maria moved behind her and massaged her shoulders.

Tammy turned with a jump. Her eyes gleamed as Maria bent to kiss her briefly. Lovingly.

“This is Tammy. My girlfriend.” Maria sat beside her.

“We met this morning. Good to see you again.” I took the opposite seat, ready to dive into my food.

Tammy nodded. “Same here.”

“Buen provecho,” Maria said.

Confused, I glanced at Tammy. I was terrible at languages.

“Enjoy your meal.” She opened her book, already done with her food. “That’s what Maria’s saying in Spanish.”

“Oh. Gracias! You too.” I bit into my steak, which was bursting with rich flavor. So good.

Maria looked at me. “I know we just met, but I’m curious. How did you manage to survive out there for so long?”

My stomach clenched. “I don’t want to talk about it.” If I could, I would erase those three years in a flash.

“Oh. Sorry.” She fiddled with her food. “You want to become a soldier?”

“Yes, after being with Davon and Matt, I’m hoping to. I want to go out on missions.” Hopefully sooner than later so I could help with Deb’s rescue.

She raised her eyebrows. “Speaking of, how did it go with him and Matt? I mean, Davon’s a good friend but stubborn as hell. He’s got this ‘I’m an asshole. Don’t come near me’ vibe around him.” She chuckled.

A bark of laughter escaped me. “He’s all right.” I sobered, thinking about all he’d done for me in the last month. About his kiss. “He’s a good man.”

Tammy glanced at me, adjusted her glasses, and went back to her book.

“Oh no. I know that look. Don’t tell me…”

“Don’t tell you what?” Davon’s deep voice rolled through me like a warm wave. He put his arm on the back of my chair and kissed beside my ear. “Hi. Sorry I’m late. Let me get my food, and I’ll be right back.” He nodded to Maria and Tammy. “Hello, ladies.”

Tammy stared after him as he walked away to get his food.

“Oh, right, you’ve never met him,” Maria said. “That’s General Niles, Davon for short. I sometimes forget he was out there when you got here.” She grinned at me. “My admiration goes to you. I’d never be able to cope with him.”

I laughed.

Tammy rose. “I need to go back to work. Nice seeing you again.
